Australia Street Infants School, COLA: Scale Architecture
Photography: Brett Boardman
Jury Citation: Our state schools are often forced to resort to ‘off-the-shelf’ demountables to procure their small buildings. However, the principal of Australia Street Infants School was determined to go down a different route to realise a multipurpose building that could not be found in the Bunnings catalogue. The architects have worked together with the school principal (also the client) and the school community as a whole to achieve this building. It was an extremely ambitious project with a small budget that required a great deal of political prowess to see it through to a successful completion. Yet these limitations did not hamper the vision to build something that is distinctive, architecturally detailed and far beyond a standard covered outdoor learning area. The jury was greatly encouraged by what this small building achieved for the school as a whole.
